Competing at the World Sailing Championships and also ski instructors

Identical twins Nikhil and Emil, now 17, were born in New York City but spent most of their summers visiting their grandparents in Vancouver, Canada, where they had enjoyed sailing in summer camps since the age of 6. It was during these exciting summer breaks that they discovered their love for sailing. Little did they know this childhood adventure would one day evolve into a competitive pursuit for them.

While attending an all-boys school in Connecticut, the twins explored various sports, including soccer, squash, and tennis. However, it was when their family relocated to Seattle in 7th grade that marked their reconnection and involvement in sailing. They decided to pursue the sport by joining their local Yacht Club at age fourteen, marking the beginning of their competitive sailing journey.

Despite initial setbacks at the local level, Nikhil and Emil’s dedication and perseverance led to significant improvements in the regional Northwest Circuit. Their commitment to the sport culminated in their participation in the U.S. Youth Championship in Bristol, RI. Nikhil states, “Our ultimate goal is to campaign for the Olympics and hopefully qualify and represent Canada at the Olympic Games.”  As dual citizens, the twins subsequently qualified for Team Canada at the Youth Sailing World Championship in Brazil in December of 2023.

There are five distinct classes of boats in the Youth Sailing World Championship, each with its own set of characteristics and competitive dynamics. Nikhil and Emil competed in the International 420 (I420) class, a highly competitive and popular boat in the sailing world. The I420 measures 13.78 ft. in
length and features three sails, accommodating only two sailors. They were selected to be the
representatives for Canada in the male I420 class, competing against 400 athletes from 61 other countries with similar qualifications.

Emil reflects, “We are competitive, but being twins and sailing together enhances communication, allowing us to have open discussions unlike others not sailing with their siblings.” They foster healthy competition and exhibit a true brotherly bond. Nikhil and Emil’s participation in the Youth World championship showcased their skill and determination on the global stage of youth sailing.

Academically, Emil is interested in business and is considering majoring in business economics or international studies. Nikhil is exploring economics, business, and engineering, with a focus on aerospace engineering and International relations.

Outside of sailing, Nikhil and Emil have been skiing since a young age and are accomplished skiers. They are ski instructors and use their advanced skills and expertise in skiing techniques to teach and guide others on the slopes. The twins are passionate advocates for adaptive skiing and sailing, striving to increase accessibility to these thrilling sports for individuals with disabilities. Their dedication extends beyond personal achievement, as they actively work to create inclusive environments where everyone can experience the joy and freedom of skiing and sailing.

This remarkable journey from humble beginnings to international competition serves as a testament to the twins' determination and passion for sailing. Starting with sailing the Optimist dinghy at age six to representing Canada in the 2023 Youth World Sailing Championship, they honed their skills and ardently embraced challenges. As they prepare to qualify for a place in the 2024 Youth Sailing World Championship in Lake Garda, Italy, fueled by dreams of the Olympics, they continue to inspire others with their relentless pursuit of excellence in the roaring seas.
