Tornadoes are violent and can happen anywhere. In 2020 there were 1,075 tornadoes across the US with the greatest risk in the Central, Southeast, Midwest, Southeast, and Florida regions.

The USA has been particularly, and surprisingly, affected by the pandemic, due in large measure to political tardiness and an unwillingness to confront it early on, as well as a resistance to preventive measures by some segments of the public. As a result, the infection rate and the economic and social consequences of the virus have been significantly higher than would be expected.
Consul General Abrar Hashmi recently visited the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Center in Atlanta, where he met local leaders from the Ismaili community and toured the Jamatkhana facility. Mr. Hashmi is based at the offices of the Consulate General of Pakistan in Houston, with jurisdiction in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, Arkansas, Colorado, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.
The year 2020 marked the 25th anniversary of Focus Humanitarian Assistance USA (FOCUS USA), with offices in Washington, D.C. Its immediate objective was to support Central Asians emerging from civil instability, socioeconomic insecurity, and those at high risk of being harmed by natural disasters. In the United States, FOCUS has been especially active in strengthening community preparedness and emergency planning as well as providing disaster response and recovery support.
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. The 2020 theme for the International Day of Peace was “Shaping Peace Together,” and the United Nations encouraged citizens around the world to celebrate the day by spreading compassion, kindness and hope in the face of the pandemic.

The Ismaili Council for the Southeastern USA participated in the 2020 National Faith and Blue Weekend, an initiative co-convened by Movement Forward, Inc. (a bridge-building, solutions-focused human and civil rights organization based in Atlanta), and the US Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services. The initiative is supported by nearly every major law enforcement organization across the United States.
