Asma and Shamshu Punjani are two Texans whose lives have been irrevocably changed by this simple yet potent activity. Each Sunday, they unite with a community of like-minded bikers, embarking on a journey that not only enhances their health but also bolsters their local community contribution through L’Étape Texas (formerly L’Étape San Antonio), now operated by San Antonio Sports.
Their passion for cycling was ignited in 2023, inspired by a sport that draws over 16,000 cyclists annually from more than 21 countries. With a global viewership of 10-12 million, cycling has evolved into a community in its own right. Whether one is racing for the challenge of the 100-miler, 60-miler, or 25-miler, the legendary L’Étape San Antonio invites participants of all ages to engage in a fun-filled family activity.
L’Étape Texas is a genuine delight for cyclists, nestled in the culturally rich Texan landscape. It offers riders an experience similar to the Tour de France, winding through neighborhoods and into the hill country like true champions.
As with countless families, the Punjanis confronted the challenges of COVID-19 head-on. Asma, a mother of two, vividly recalls its impact on their daily lives and the limited options for maintaining their health and well-being. In these trying times, cycling emerged as a beacon of hope, a sport that brought the family together for some much-needed 'me time' on their bikes. When asked, Shamshu remarked, “A family that rides together stays together.”

Since 2018, L’Étape has raised an impressive $300 million, supporting charities like United Way with $116 million and recording 580,000 volunteer hours.
Through the L’Étape event, Texas brings values profoundly rooted in community impact to life. It empowers local businesses by attracting talent and fostering economic growth, a mutually beneficial endeavor.
The Punjanis love the sport because it resonates with them on two levels: faith and family. It generates personal growth and contributes positively to the community. Asma, Shamshu, Asha, and Shawn invite others to join L’Étape Texas, saying, “No road is too long when you have good company.” Improve your quality of life while helping individuals and communities.
