According to the United Nations World Food Programme, 309 million people in 71 countries globally are in the grips of a severe food crisis, facing ‘catastrophic hunger’. The reasons for this crisis are multidimensional and often compounded by a multiplicity of natural as well as man-made issues.
On International World Food Day, let us recognise the fundamental importance of food, a basic human necessity, for the survival of every person on our planet. One hundred and fifty countries globally will be observing World Food Day on October 16 to raise awareness about global hunger, promote focus on agricultural food production and enhance both international and national cooperation in combating hunger and food insecurity.
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) continues to contribute, as it has done for the last six decades, to make efforts aimed at reducing food insecurity and global poverty through its programmes and initiatives.
This day not only draws our attention to the urgent need to tackle global hunger and food insecurity. It also highlights the essential role nutritious food plays in promoting physical and psychological well-being. Understanding the fundamental link between diet and health enables us to be more mindful when making food choices and guides us to avoiding foods that lead to nutritional imbalance and ill health.
Millions of people globally survive on donations of food packages which provide nutritious meals to those in need. Seek out and donate by volunteering your resources to such programmes.
World Food Day also advocates for reforms in food systems to enhance global access to nutritious foods. This includes supporting policies, encouraging food sovereignty, sustainable agriculture and fair trade practices, all of which contribute to improving the health of individuals and communities. Being aware of the goals of World Food Day allows us to move towards more equitable and nutritious food systems that promote health and sustainability for all.
Finally, let us allow this day to serve as a vital reminder of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the global fight against hunger and food insecurity. By focusing on the importance of nutritious, accessible and sustainable food, we can make significant strides toward meeting Goal #2 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which is “zero hunger.”
Let us commit to fostering food systems that value sustainability, reduce waste and ensure everyone has access to the healthy and diverse foods we all need to thrive. Together, we can build a future where food security is a reality for all.
