Last year, Mawlana Hazar Imam approved a new set of guidelines for Jamatkhana volunteers. Since then, the Ismaili Council for Pakistan with the help of dedicated volunteers has been working to launch the new structure.

Noorima Rehan is a 17-year-old aspiring Ismaili vocalist from Ghulkin, Gojal, Hunza. Located approximately 142km from Gilgit, Ghulkin is situated on the west of Hunza in the Karakorum, surrounded by glaciers and streams. Noorima's love for music runs deep within her being, and she finds herself singing in every moment of her life. Her vocal skills have propelled her to new heights. Most notably,  she recently represented Pakistan during King Charles III's Coronation Concert in London.

According to the United Nations (UN), climate change poses a threat to virtually every aspect of life on Earth, from human health and livelihoods to ecosystems and infrastructure. The fact that there has been a substantial increase in severe heatwaves, droughts and wildfires over the past few years is a testament to the urgency of the climate crisis we are amidst. International forums have started to stress on the desperate need for global action to address the impact of climate change and promote sustainable practices. Mawlana Hazar Imam has also been a vocal advocate for environmental sustainability, stating, “The consequences of climate change, if unchecked, will be catastrophic for all humanity and for the natural world we rely on.”

Jubilee Arts was inaugurated during the commemoration of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Diamond Jubilee and consists of three anchor programmes: The International Art Gallery (IAG), the International Film Festival (IFF) and the International Performing Arts Showcase (IPAS). The Aga Khan Youth and Sports Board for Pakistan will host regional and national qualifiers as part of the National Arts Festival 2023, leading up to Jubilee Arts at the Global Encounters Festival in 2024.

The Jamat is aware that The Council for Pakistan has been issuing periodic economic advisories after assessing the prevailing economic situation of the country. While taking the recent developments into consideration, it is clear that the country is passing through a difficult phase where it is facing low foreign reserves, weakened Pakistani Rupee, low economic growth, high monthly inflation rates, and very high interest rates for bank borrowings.

Small-scale farming is a critical source of livelihood for rural communities. Due to limited access to information, resources and technology, many farmers struggle to improve their farming practices and achieve sustainable yields. In recent years, the Aga Khan Economic Planning Board for Pakistan has recognized this challenge and taken a proactive approach to support small-scale farmers to improve their agricultural practices and increase their farming income.

Pakistan Day, celebrated on 23 March, saw four outstanding individuals receive prestigious awards from the President of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi. These included the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, and the President’s Award for Pride of Performance. The recipients were recognised for significant contributions to their respective fields, to the national interests of Pakistan, or to world peace, cultural, and other significant public endeavours.

As Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Karachi on a warm and hazy spring day in 1983, thousands had gathered under the shade of a white marquee for a momentous event. The Aga Khan University was to receive its founding charter. “Today,” Hazar Imam said in his acceptance speech, “is historic in the true sense.”

The year 2023 marks 40 years — over half the lifetime of Pakistan — since the Aga Khan University (AKU) was granted its charter. In an exclusive interview for The Ismaili TV, Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin, AKU’s third president, describes the University’s history and vision, and his own involvement with the institution.
