Welcome to the Global STEM Festival!

The Global STEM Festival (GSF) is an opportunity for 5-18 year olds to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) virtually.

Following on last year's successful programme, this year the GSF looks at "creating real life solutions for real life problems". This will be achieved by focusing on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and how they apply to our everyday life as well as on global capacity. The festival this year looks to equip participants with STEM skills to understand these problems, find sustainable solutions and consider their applications in real life. This will allow for exploration of the natural and created world around us, and further develop important skills, including critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, research and analytical skills.

The Festival is not a competition, but an opportunity to see the talent of the youth and young adults from around the world, and learn from one another. Although subsmissions are for 5-18 year old, this is something that parents/guardians can also get involved in as these initiatives can affect all our lives!

The Global STEM Festival took place from 26 June to 12 September 2021. The Festival Finale was held on 26 September 2021.

“...a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet.”

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership.

They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

The Global STEM Festival has grouped the 17 Sustainable Development Goals into the following overarching themes:

Climate and Energy

Economic Growth

After completing registration, participants will receive newsletters dedicated to these themes to help guide their respective solutions.

WHAT IS STEM?

WHY IS STEM IMPORTANT?

As the Government of Western Australia states, it is predicted that in 15 years, more than 75% of new jobs will require STEM skills.

In fact, as we see a growing search for STEM-related jobs, an investment in these skills proves to be beneficial in a child's education as it provides them the necessary competencies to succeed professionally.

Throughout the years, STEM is becoming even more present in our lives as the world is evolving around Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, allowing us to tackle everyday challenges and improving our quality of life.

In addition, the importance of STEM is amplified in our world as it has constantly been a key instrument in shrinking the gender and ethnic gaps at times found in these fields.

Besides the capacities achieved in these areas, following a STEM approach will allow children and young adults to develop skills such as creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, adaptability, technological skills, teamwork, communication and leadership, providing them the foundation to achieve their goals.

By participating in the Festival, children and young adults will be able to not only learn but also develop key skills for their future.

We also invite parents to engage in this Festival by accompanying their child throughout the whole journey - from finding inspiration; learning the key concepts needed for the project; developing, recording and submitting their project; and of course participating in the Festival Finale together.
