Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner accepted a donation of half a million reusable face masks from Focus Humanitarian Assistance USA (FOCUS) and the Ismaili Council for the Southwestern US. The formal announcement of the donation took place at Houston’s City Hall on 17 June 2020.

Following the success of Cricket last weekend in Dallas, over 1,200 athletes poured into Austin from around the country on Thanksgiving Day to continue the United States Ismaili Games (USIG).

From the minute athletes stepped into Austin, they could sense the excitement that pervaded the city stemming from the Games.

On 26 October 2019, the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Center in Houston hosted TEDxSugarLand for the fourth consecutive year. In keeping with the general theme of celebrations across the greater Houston area this year, marking the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing, the theme of TEDxSugarLand 2019 was One Small Idea, One Giant Leap for Mankind.

An Eid Luncheon held at the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Center in Sugar Land, Texas began with a video highlighting the work of landscape architect Nelson Byrd Woltz at the Aga Khan Garden in Alberta, Canada. This firm has also been commissioned to design the landscape at the new Ismaili Center Houston.

A concert titled, The Art of the Afghan Rubab, took place in partnership with the Asia Society Texas Center, the Aga Khan Music Initiative and the Ismaili Council for the United States. The concert was held on October 11, and featured the Aga Khan Master Musicians, who create music inspired by their own deep roots in the cultures of the Middle East and Mediterranean Basin, South Asia, Central Asia, and China.

The Houston branch is the third largest Consular Corps in the United States after Washington, DC and New York City. On Friday, June 7, 2019, the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Center hosted the inaugural Houston Consular Corps luncheon in Sugar Land, Texas. Over 90 countries were represented to engage in discussions on economic development by fostering foreign relations. Amongst the attendees were guest speakers Fort Bend County Judge KP George, Ambassador Juan B. Sosa, Consul General of Panama and Dean of the Consular Corps of Houston, and Jeffrey C. Wiley, President & CEO of the Fort Bend Economic Development Council.
