“The ripple effect that a teacher can have as he or she touches the lives of hundreds of students over the years provides a multiplier that even the sharpest business man would envy”. Mawlana Hazar Imam’s speech at the inauguration of the Professional Development Centre, Northern areas of Pakistan, 19th October 2000.

The World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually around the world on October 5th. This day reminds us of the importance of education and teachers, but also of the importance of celebrating their work.

This occasion was also celebrated by the Ismaili Tariqah and Religious Education Board (ITREB), in Portugal, with a dinner for religious education teachers. This was an opportunity for teachers to enjoy a relaxing moment, get to know each other better and exchange experiences. Our dedicated teachers provide religious education to the young murids, children and youngsters of the Jamat, on a weekly basis. Through the Ta’lim curriculum, they inspire our children to look at religion as a source of inspiration to live their lives.

An 11-year-old Dar-at-Ta’lim student, shared the following, while reflecting about the importance of religious education teachers: “My Dar-at-Ta’lim teachers are very important to me, I know that if it was not for them, I would not learn so much about my religion. By learning more about my faith I can explore better the world around me”.

The role of teachers is key in supporting the children to feel confident in their identities and valued members of a global Jamat. As Mawlana Hazar Imam said: “Teaching is one of the most valued professions because it opens minds to greater self-awareness as well as to the knowledge that gives learners greater control over their destinies” (Mawlana Hazar Imam at the Inauguration of the Professional Development Centre in Northern areas, Pakistan, 19 October 2000).

A very big thank you to all the religious education teachers of the children and youngsters of the Jamat!

We invite the members of the Jamat that might be interested, to join our team, and make a positive, inspiring and lasting impact in the lives of our young murids. Let’s change the world, one child at a time!
