Gulzar Quintino

The current refugee crisis was the inspiration for this sculpture. The piece evokes the fear and uncertainty faced by the victims, but at the same time highlighting their strength and resilience. As citizens of the world, we have a responsibility to shed light on this urgent matter and as a community we are committed to diversity, pluralism and solidarity.
When a project accommodates the active participation of a community, does it become socially relevant? What if you could make people question even for a brief moment about the environmental issue? It was for this purpose that the location was chosen in a non-randomly manner, in such a transition from the environmental awareness towards something utilitarian. Environmental values, in terms of recycling and reusing material, have as much value as the work itself.

Besides a relationship of interdependence between space, work and spectator, this piece has an intervention dimension inviting the public to be an active part of it.
The need for balance, integrating the concepts of commitment and freedom through all the experiences acquired, is the basis for this sculpture. The gravitational pull of the Earth gives objects weight. On the contrary, we have the meaning of lightness, just as we have night and day, hate and love. Perhaps more than making a choice, we must add all the experiences, building the unique Being that we are.

Gulzar showed, very early on, her passion for drawing and painting. But, it’s sculpture that has been very present in her life, which serves as a form of therapy and meditation. Come and find out more about Gulzar.

Gulzar Quintino

Born in Mozambique in 1958, starts developing a taste for drawing and painting from a young age.

Between 1998 and 2001 attends a sculpture course at Ar.Co - Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual, Lisbon, which allows her to go through various experiences with the use of different materials and techniques.

The year-long training received in conservation and restoration at the Museum of Portimão allowed her to acquire a new insight on how to handle certain objects.

In addition to ephemeral sculptures, she makes use of unusual materials and everyday life objects. Sculpture as a form of therapy and meditation has been a constant.

In the more recent years, she has dedicated herself to ephemeral works focusing on environmental and social issues.
