While we've all been dealing with the ongoing challenges of COVID-19, with the fall season incoming, we must not forget the seasonal adversary that reemerges like clockwork: the flu. With recent increases in the number of cases, our vigilance in safeguarding our health becomes more critical than ever. Check out how simple measures like vaccination and personal hygiene can help protect yourself and your family in this article!

The fall season traditionally heralds the arrival of the flu, a contagious respiratory illness that affects millions worldwide. As we emerge from the warmth of summer, the mingling of outdoor gatherings, returning to school, and more time spent indoors increases the risk of flu transmission. Simultaneously, the global pandemic of COVID-19 remains a formidable challenge, with new variants emerging, cases increasing, and affecting communities.

There are simple and easy ways that you can help prevent this:

First line of defense - Vaccination against the flu and COVID-19
Getting vaccinated against both viruses protects yourself and the people around you. Since they are two different vaccines, you may opt to get them in different days or co-administer them, just as long as they are given in different body parts.

The flu vaccine should be taken every year to reduce transmission, chances of infection, and, if infection does occur, reduce symptoms and complications. It is strongly recommended for those of 65 years of age and over, pregnancy, and those with comorbidities.

Furthermore, with the recent increase in cases, seasonal boosters of the COVID-19 vaccine are also being promoted by the SNS, especially for these specific groups:
• 60 years old and over
• Between 5 and 59 years old with comorbidities which increase complication risk
• Priority groups (healthcare workers, elderly care home residents etc.) – for more information, please check the SNS website.

Both vaccines have been deemed completely safe and it is proved that, with this dual protection, you are defending yourself, your family, and the most vulnerable in society from severe illness and complications.
Protecting yourself has never been this easy! The flu vaccine is free for several groups, including 60 years old+ and priority groups as mentioned above.

The next vaccination campaign starts in the second half of September and will run in community pharmacies and health centers.

Second line of defense – Hygiene practices
Many underestimate the power of hygiene. While vaccines are a crucial part of our defense, they are not the only solution. Incorporating good hygiene practices into our daily routines can significantly reduce the spread of both the flu and COVID-19. You can do this by:

• Frequent Handwashing: wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public places or touching surfaces. Hand hygiene remains one of the simplest yet most effective ways to prevent the transmission of viruses. If water and soap are not available, disinfectant gels work just as well and are practical to use.
• Masking and Respiratory Etiquette: continue wearing masks in crowded or indoor settings and follow respiratory etiquette by covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. These practices help prevent the spread of respiratory droplets that carry viruses.
• Social Distancing: maintain physical distance from others, especially in situations where it's challenging to wear masks effectively. Avoid close contact with those who are sick and stay home if you're feeling unwell.
• Cleaning and Disinfecting: regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, and countertops. This helps to eliminate the presence of viruses on these surfaces.

In our collective fight against the flu and COVID-19, vaccination and hygiene practices go hand in hand. By getting vaccinated against both viruses and adopting rigorous hygiene habits, we can protect ourselves and our communities. Remember, small actions matter!
