During 2023, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) achieved important goals in its areas of activity, reflecting its ongoing commitment to global progress.

This was a year marked by challenges, but nevertheless AKDN demonstrated its ability to positively impact different communities around the world through an integrated and collaborative approach.

One of AKDN's most significant achievements in 2023 was the expansion of health services in underserved regions, providing more than 8 million outpatient consultations through a network of more than 700 health facilities. This not only improved access to essential medical care, but also strengthened communities and promoted general well-being.

In addition, AKDN continued to invest in education, impacting almost 1 million students through 200 schools and 2 universities, the Aga Khan University (AKU) (with campuses in several countries, including Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) and the University of Central Asia (UCA) (with campuses in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan). These efforts have equipped a number of individuals with the necessary skills to face the challenges of the modern world and contribute to a prosperous future.

AKDN's commitment to economic empowerment also stood out in 2023, with initiatives such as microfinance and entrepreneurship development reaching more than 50 million people, helping them break the cycle of poverty and achieve financial self-sufficiency.

In addition to its work in areas such as health, education and economic development, AKDN has also dedicated itself to the preservation of cultural heritage and sustainable development. Examples of this are conservation projects at sites such as the Mes Aynak Complex in Afghanistan, the Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara in Tanzania and the Djinguereber Archaeological Site in Mali or the revitalization of historic urban areas such as the Historic Centre of Kabul in Afghanistan, the Old Town of Lamu in Kenya and the Old Town Quarter of Mombasa also in Kenya, promoting cultural tourism and sustainable development.

Through conservation projects, the revitalization of historic areas and the promotion of sustainable practices, AKDN has contributed to the protection of the environment and the celebration of cultural diversity.

In summary, AKDN's achievements in 2023 reflect its mission to promote human development and improve the quality of life of communities around the world. Through collaborative partnerships and an integrated approach, AKDN continues to be a positive force for change, empowering people to build a more prosperous and sustainable future.
