Tell us your story…

“When we moved to New Zealand, the world was going through a major economic recession and finding suitable employment for a new migrant like myself was almost impossible.

I believe, ‘time wasted’ is ‘time killed’!

While I was desperately looking for an employment opportunity in business and HR, one morning, I decided to walk to our nearest early childhood centre and daycare. I offered them my services on a voluntary basis until I find suitable paid employment. That day changed my life!

During my voluntary employment, I loved spending time with young children, however I went above and beyond to learn the early childhood industry standards and compliance requirements, as well as understanding the context in which these centres operate.

Within a few weeks of volunteering, I was offered a paid contract at the same centre. I was open to a change in my professional field, for a short while anyway.

A few months into the role and I decided to enroll in a Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Education. Life seemed overwhelming for a little while – full-time work, looking after family and then late-night studies day after day.

My husband became a rock-solid support for me and my family. Without his support, my professional growth would not have been possible.

With the diploma came more opportunities, I was promoted to Team Leader role at the same centre. But I wanted more from life. I wanted to reach my full potential and that thought led me to open my own childcare centre. It was a huge decision and a very bumpy journey.”

What challenges did you face…

“Opening a new ECE Centre needed a lot of work and commitment. From obtaining building construction and safety approvals to organising centre operating licenses from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education; obtaining the local council’s permission for food preparation; and adhering to industry compliance and regulations – there was too much to manage. Finally, the day came when we were granted the operating licence. It took about one year to prepare and get ready for the big day when the centre doors were opened for the community.

Next came the marketing, enrollment, and team-building challenges along with all the other teething problems. But here we are after 3 years of successfully operating and all the challenges and hard work didn’t stop us to open the second branch of the centre.”
