Education and learning mean different things to different people because each one of us experiences life from a unique perspective. Learning allows us to expand our thinking and gain skills and knowledge in every aspect of life, which in turn, extends beyond ourselves to the communities in which we live and interact.

In the speech made during the foundation laying ceremony of the Aga Khan Academy in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 20 May 2008, His Highness the Aga Khan said, “Our traditional teachings remind us of our individual obligation to seek knowledge unto the ends of the earth - and of our social obligation to honor and nurture the full potential of every human life.”

Since learning occurs constantly at both the conscious and subconscious level, is it not a gift upon each of us? Therefore, it is our responsibility to be mindful of the learning that lends us towards our purpose.

As we celebrate this Global Day of Education, let us strive to engage in lifelong learning and find ways to help others realise the same.

The fifth International Day of Education will be celebrated on 24 January 2023 under the theme “to invest in people and prioritise education." The United Nations declared this day to celebrate education and reflect on the importance of learning for development and peace.
