Os tempos de mudança são uma oportunidade de esperança e de renovação dos nossos valores, tal como Mawlana Hazar Imam refere neste discurso aquando da Cerimónia de Inauguração do Centro Ismaili de Lisboa, a 11 de julho de 1998.

“A inauguração do Centro Ismaili hoje simboliza tanto as boas-vindas concedidas pelo Governo de Portugal, a resposta da comunidade Ismaili a esta terra de harmonia e oportunidade, e o seu compromisso permanente com Portugal. Estes novos edifícios e os espaços que ele contém e que o circundam, são ricos em simbolismo: recorrendo à pluralidade de culturas que caracterizam os Ismailis aqui e no mundo. A variedade de recursos que inclui espelha os valores-chave da comunidade Ismaili, a sua organização, a sua disciplina, a sua consciência social, a importância das suas organizações comunitárias e a sua atitude perante a sociedade em que vive.

Vivemos numa época de mudanças aceleradas, cujas evidências se encontram à nossa volta diariamente. A mudança pode significar estímulo, oportunidade e esperança, mas pode também significar desorientação, deslocação e até conflito. A mudança pode significar progresso, mas também pode significar que são necessários esforços especiais para melhorar o acesso aos benefícios do desenvolvimento para aqueles que estão menos preparados para tirar partido deles.”

By visualising the Lisbon Ismaili Centre and the sense of peace the building and gardens reflect, what symbols and cultural expressions would you observe through it, more specifically, next time you have the chance to enter the building? What new curiosities arise from the building you have known well, for you to rediscover upon your next visit there? Times of change are an opportunity for hope and for renewal of our values, as Mawlana Hazar Imam refers in this speech at the Opening Ceremony Ismaili Centre Lisbon, on 11th July 1998.

“The inauguration of the Centro Ismaili today symbolises both the welcome accorded by the Government of Portugal, the response of the Ismaili community to this land of harmony and opportunity, and its permanent commitment to Portugal. These new buildings and the spaces within and around them, are rich in symbolism; drawing on the plurality of cultures which characterise Ismailis here, and around the world. The array of facilities included is a reflection of the core values of the Ismaili community, its organisation, its discipline, its social conscience, the importance of its community organisations, and its attitude toward the society in which it exists.

We live in a time of accelerating change, evidence of which surrounds us on a daily basis. Change can mean stimulation, opportunity, and hope, but it can also mean disorientation, dislocation, and even conflict. Change can mean progress, but it can also mean that special efforts are required to improve access to the benefits of development for those less prepared to take advantage of them.”
