Mozambique’s president, His Excellency Armando Guebuza, officially inaugurated the refurbished Polana Serena Hotel, a historic water-front landmark in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, and one of Africa’s grandest colonial era hotels. His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and Founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED), which restored the hotel to its former glory, was also present, as was his younger brother Prince Amyn Aga Khan.

Cabo Delgado, the northernmost province, suffers the highest rates of human poverty in the country. In 2003, the percentage of people living below the national poverty line in Cabo Delgado was reported at 63.1% compared to the 54 % reported nationally. It is estimated that Cabo Delgado has a per capita Gross National Product of less than half of the national average.
