The Aga Khan Academy, Maputo is being purpose built on a large 50 acre campus to provide worldclass facilities for the students and staff. The Early Years Centre, Junior School, sports and residential facilities are already in use while the construction of the rest of the campus is well underway.
Senior School completed
Like every building on campus, this section has been a labour of love and faced its share of challenges.
Nevertheless, the building was completed and handed over on time, it’s construction schedule rather unscathed by the challenges presented by the effects of COVID-19.
Flora
While the architecture is what makes a school, it is the flora spread across the grounds that defines the campus of the Aga Khan Academies. The Aga Khan Academy Maputo has a thriving landscaping and gardening project with 1000 trees, 7000 shrubs, 200 fruits trees and 800 climbers.
Taking inspiration from His Highness the Aga Khan’s guidance, the trees chosen for the campus are “rooted in history and steeped in tradition.” The Academy Landscaping project uses a rich variety of trees, approximately 35 different species of African trees as well as other tropical trees.These trees were selected from a large range of iconic indigenous trees that adds beauty and biodiversity to the campus. These include the royal palm, baobab, acacia and mango trees among others. In the coming years, students and faculty will lend a hand in the upkeep the nursery and get hands on training in gardening and landscaping.
