“Be agents of change: Believe in yourself, step up and lead by example”, the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day Gala event held at the Ismaili Centre, Burnaby. International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The event celebrated the achievements of Ismaili women who broke down barriers to achieve success in science, business, politics, civil action and law. These inspiring women shared their trials, tribulations and succeses as they paved the way to ‘Be Agents of Change’ in their respective industries.
Speakers included the Honourable Mobina Jaffer, Senator for British Columbia, who spoke about breaking barriers in politics and law for minority women, and Karimah Es Sabar, Founder, CEO & Partner with Quark Venture Inc., touched on the evolving role of women in STEM (Science, technology, energy and mathematics). Es Sabaar, who has been recognized as one of ‘B.C.’s Top 100 Women of Influence’ said, “Agents of change do not get up one morning and decide that’s who they’re going to be,”. “It all starts from a passion deep within – something you really care about and feel about.” In addition, Arzeena Hamir, owner of Amara Farm, shared her story as a leader at the forefront of the emerging sustainable and integrated agriculture sector, and Salima Samnani, lawyer and Civil Resolution Tribunal Member, spoke to the audience about her aim to turn the world into the place it should be: a place with promise, compassion, and equal opportunity.
