Some important breakthroughs in any institution create an impact that not only increases the quality of life of people but also becomes an inspiration for others to follow. One such endeavor is the UBCL, an exemplary alliance between all the bakers of the Ismaili community in Hyderabad. The first meeting of UBCL was held in the year 2000. It was founded in 2011 with 72 members as part of the association which has now reached a total of 279 members who work on this extraordinary joint venture with the spirit of a family business where each member is like a family to the other.

This initiative started with a mere loan of 10,000 Rupees and 2 employees where a Central Purchase Unit (CPU) was set up and in a span on nine years, it has now reached to about 15 employees and a net worth of One Crore Twenty Lac Rupees in 2018.

The inspiration behind the establishment of UBCL comes from the guidance of Mawlana Hazar Imam who has always encouraged members of the Ismaili community to build business alliances that would help in their social and economic development. The principles of brotherhood, shared vision, collective efforts and an increased quality of life are some of the underlying factors that have made this endeavor a grand and sustainable success. AKEPB (I) is constantly engaged with UBCL helping them with best practice, improved governance and compliance practices, continuing education programs and modern vendors that are helpful to UBCL.

The mission and vision of UBCL revolves around quality food with health and hygiene as the primal motto followed by enhancing skills and knowledge for upgrading the services. UBCL draws financial benefits through common procurement of goods, distribution and manufacturing. This team endeavor has bigger dreams of establishing itself as a brand across India and with the zeal and sincerity it has been working, it surely has reached national recognition.

Some of UBCL’s recent achievements include its association with top brands in the food industry such as Coca-Cola, Cadbury, Nestle, Britannia, ITC, Parle and many more. Additional income from these brands is also earned through discount procurement of about 15-20%. In due course, the Central Purchase Unit has shifted from 1400 square feet to 3500 square feet and two delivery vans which provide weekly supply at no extra cost. UBCL has also run several community helping initiatives like having a tie-up with Aga Khan Health Board and conducted a health camp for which 50% of the cost was paid by UBCL. It also provides guidance to members who wish to procure food licenses.

The ongoing goals of the UBCL are far and wide where the team wishes to create and enhance 10 new and already existing bakeries every year and provide constructive feedback, help and strategies to enhance footfall. Additionally, it also plans to provide icing classes for ladies, conduct baking competitions between members, initiate English and Computer classes for members to enhance their skills and also to train the staff in latest skills required as per the market standards. UBCL also plans on moving its data into a complete online platform in due course.

The cherry on the top was the majestic cake cutting ceremony held in February 2018 on the occasion of the arrival of Mawlana Hazar Imam in Hyderabad. The cake was one of its kind with a whopping 940 kilograms of delicious efforts led solely by the UBCL to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee year of His Highness the Aga Khan. The cake was distributed and savored by all the members of the community across Hyderabad.

With a glorious journey like this and a profound vision towards growth, unity and quality, we can for sure expect a leading brand of quality foods within the country. It is the sweet example of UBCL, just like their cakes that remind us to aspire towards bigger goals towards our future. With the hard work and continuing efforts of each of its members, the brand that has been created is vision and inspiration for us all.
