The history of the Ismaili Muslims is a richly-woven tapestry, reflecting numerous geographies, languages, cultures and centuries. Faith and ideas have found diverse expression in poetry, philosophy and architecture, amongst other disciplines. This pluralistic heritage is continually celebrated even as its spirit is harnessed to the contemporary world.
The Ismaili tradition of voluntary service has a long history, and has continued with the creation of modern institutions by Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah and by Mawlana Hazar Imam, with the array of institutions in countries where the Jamat resides, as well as the developing world through the Aga Khan Development Network.
On 11 July, 2017, His Highness the Aga Khan will mark his Diamond Jubilee, or 60th year as the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the world’s Shia Ismaili Muslims.
