We are excited to back in 2022 at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa!

Global Encounters Kenya

Our Kenya camp is the first of the Global Encounters Camps. The programme is based at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, the first Academy established globally in the network of international schools. Mombasa is a vibrant Swahili town nestled on the extraordinary East African coast.

Academy educators, programme faculty and local artists lead classes and workshops. The focus is on experiential and hands-on learning. Service projects are organised in collaboration with the Academy's stellar educators and local communities. Participants also have opportunities to see first-hand, the work of long-standing AKDN agencies in the areas of education, health and economic development.

CORE classes are centred on ethics and leadership. Participants have an opportunity to explore local culture through workshops, including drumming, dance, theatre, Swahili cuisine, and visual arts.

Sports, swimming and free-time are offered everyday and evening programmes provide opportunities to gather as a global community and have fun!

Participants will experience local life and culture through delicious cuisine, visits to historical world heritage sites, afternoon beach excursions and a wildlife safari.

Overall, the Kenya programme draws inspiration from the rich, vibrant and diverse cultures in the country. Get excited!

Global Encounters Kenya will be held from 25 June to 17 July 2022.

Health and Safety Information

As safety is a top priority, Global Encounters will regularly share the most current COVID-19 considerations, information and programme adaptations with prospective participants and families. Given COVID is dynamic, we are being flexible in our approach.

The Global Encounters Camps Team, the Council for Kenya, and the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa are working together to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to safeguard participant health and safety.

The Academy in Mombasa is a secure campus, staffed with 24-hour security. There is an infirmary on-site. Nurses will be on duty 24-hours a day for programme participants. In case of emergency, medical facilities are located close to the campus.

The global team will continue to monitor the safety and security situation globally and will advise adaptations to the programme as necessary.

It is expected that participants will be responsible, mature and exercise caution throughout the programme.

You can find more information on health and safety at camps by visiting the COVID-19 updates page.

Please note that we require all Global Encounters Camp participants and volunteers to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before the programme starts.
