The large contemporary photographs that greet visitors at the entrance to Syria: A Living History, contrast sharply with the devastation wreaked by the country’s six-year civil war. Instead, the exhibition at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, which spans 5 000 years, celebrates the land and people of Syria — and offers hope.

Brussels, 6 October 2016 — “Since 2001, AKDN and its partners have channelled over $1 billion to enhance self-reliance and improve the quality of life of Afghans,” said Mawlana Hazar Imam yesterday, and he indicated that more will follow in the years ahead.

London, 4 February 2016 — Deploring the devastation in war-ravaged Syria, Mawlana Hazar Imam called for the establishment of “islands of stability” to provide areas of relative safety in the midst of conflict. Hazar Imam pledged $200 million towards achieving peace, stability, and reconstruction in the country.

To the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) at Focus Humanitarian Assistance in Portugal, delivering earthquake safety education is just as important as responding in the aftermath. On 10 November, the FOCUS team visited Queen Elizabeth School in Lisbon, where they led a ShakeOut earthquake drill.
