Mental health can be defined as ‘a state of wellbeing in which an individual realises their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community.’

Today marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Week in the United Kingdom, while May represents Mental Health Month in the United States. The occasion provides an ideal opportunity to ask and understand what mental health actually is, and to explore some of the existing perceptions around it.

Raju Bhai Kotadia (name changed) was a troubled man – besides the usual issues such as weather dependence, market prices and input availability that one would normally associate a farmer with, he was very concerned about damage to his crops by stray animals. Most nights he would stay up guarding his field from damage by these animals to which he sometimes lost as much as 30% of his produce.

Romikhudo Dodikhudoev is Tajikistan's only athlete at the 2016 Paralympic Games, which opens in Rio today. He will compete in the Men’s 100 metre and 400 metre races and wants his participation in the Games to be a source of hope for all people with disabilities in his country.
