This week, Ismailis and other Muslims mark Yawm‐e Ali, which commemorates the birthday of Hazrat Ali. The cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), Hazrat Ali is recognised as the most important spiritual and intellectual authority in Islam after the Holy Prophet, who, in accordance with the Shia tradition of Islam, designated him under Divine Command, as the first in the line of hereditary Imams from the Prophet’s own progeny.

Mawlana Hazar Imam looks on as University of Calgary President Dr Elizabeth Cannon reads aloud the citation accompanying the honorary Doctor of Laws degree conferred upon him in a special ceremony at the University’s Rozsa Centre. The citation highlighted Hazar Imam’s outstanding contributions to humanity and expressed admiration for his ability to bring together faith and action.

The University of Calgary conferred Mawlana Hazar Imam with its highest academic honour: a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, reserved for the most distinguished individuals who have made extraordinary achievements in community, national, or international services.
