The family unit nurtures the lives of its members, assisting them in their physical and spiritual endeavours. The wellbeing of individuals, in-turn, contributes to the overall health of the family, and that of society at large.
Naik Alam has been working in the tsunami-affected region of Aceh, Indonesia since 2005, as part of an effort to rebuild the devastated province. He has applied his knowledge of sanitation to improve access to fresh water in some of the worst-affected communities in the region.
The United Arab Emirates Thalassemia Society and Pakistani Thalassemia Society joined hands in an effort to increase awareness of this blood disorder which occurs most frequently in people of Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Southern Asian and African ancestry. About 100 000 babies worldwide are born with severe forms of thalassemia each year.
