We often hear that the children of today are the leaders of tomorrow; that they will shape the future; and that the destiny of humankind lies in their hands. On the occasion of World Teachers’ Day, 5 October 2019, we explore the positive impact made by teachers and educators within the Jamat and beyond.

To the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) at Focus Humanitarian Assistance in Portugal, delivering earthquake safety education is just as important as responding in the aftermath. On 10 November, the FOCUS team visited Queen Elizabeth School in Lisbon, where they led a ShakeOut earthquake drill.

Over the weekend of 11–12 October, the Ismaili Centre, Lisbon took part in Lisboa Open House, an annual event to raise awareness about spaces of architectural and cultural value. Visitors learnt about the relationship between the architecture of the building and the history and values of a Muslim community that has been in Portugal for decades.

Each year, many Ismaili youth from all over North America spend their summers at camps organised by the Jamati institutions. They learn about the importance of being responsible members of the society, compete at various sports and games and take on leadership roles – all while growing, discovering, playing, and making friends.

Two decades after the introduction of the Ta‘lim curriculum, primary teacher education programmes have increased the effectiveness of teaching and learning at Ismaili religious education centres. Through a modern approach to education, children learn about Islam both as a faith and through its role in shaping Muslim civilisations.
