Mawlana Hazar Imam arrives in Toronto ahead of Ismaili Centre and Aga Khan Museum opening

Toronto, 10 September 2014 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Canada this afternoon, ahead of the opening of the Aga Khan Museum and the Ismaili Centre, Toronto. The occasion, to be marked by two separate ceremonies, will take place on Friday.

He was received on behalf of the Government of Canada by the Honourable Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. Ismaili Council for Canada President Alijah Malik Talib welcomed Hazar Imam on behalf of the Jamat.

Guests had gathered in the Social Hall of the Ismaili Centre, where after addressing the audience, Mawlana Hazar Imam and the Prime Minister unveiled a ceremonial plaque to mark the occasion. Prince Amyn, Prince Rahim, Princess Salwa and Prince Hussain were present at the ceremony, and Mawlana Hazar Imam made special mention of Prince Amyn’s contributions to the project.

Following the ceremony, Mawlana Hazar Imam and Prime Minister Harper toured the Ismaili, Centre, before proceeding to the Aga Khan Museum to preside over it’s opening ceremony.

Prince Amyn Aga Khan, Vice Chairman of the Aga Khan Museum Board of Directors, and the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages addressed the audience in the auditorium of the museum. After their remarks, Mawlana Hazar Imam and Prime Minister Harper unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.

Following the ceremony, the delegates toured the museum, including the Bellerive Room and the permanent collection, before returning to the Ismaili Centre.
